About the event

Sierra Nevada forests have become dangerously unhealthy and prone to increased high-severity wildfires as the result of overly aggressive fire suppression and climate change. Beyond the vast negative impact on people’s health and property, biodiversity and watersheds, wildfires have at times turned Sierra Nevada forests from a net carbon sink into a net carbon source, and greenhouse gas emissions from wildfires are negating California’s climate pollution reduction efforts.

Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, including the reintroduction of controlled burns as well as strategic thinning to reduce forest density. Implemented responsibly, biomass energy is often seen as a win-win solution to restore forest health and mitigate climate change by turning excess forest waste into clean energy. Panelists will discuss the interaction and conditions of ecologically responsible forest management, fire resilience, climate change and bioenergy, in meeting one of Sierra Nevada’s biggest challenges.
